Home Office publish Prevent and Channel statistics (April 2018 – March 2019)

On 19 December 2019, the Home Office released Prevent and Channel statistics for the period April 2018 – March 2019. The full report can be found here.

Some key findings from the statistics are:

• 5,738 individuals were referred to Prevent in the reporting period, a decrease on 22% on last year. This is the lowest number for referrals over a year since data has been made available (year ending March 2016).
• The majority of individuals referred were aged under 20 years old (58%) and male (87%).
• 33% (1,887) of Prevent referrals were from the education sector, however the vast majority of these are from primary and secondary education rather than HE/FE.
• The largest proportion of individuals referred were from the north-east of England (17%), followed by London (16%).
• 77% of referrals (4,407) were assessed as not suitable for Channel. Most of these referrals were subsequently signposted to other services for other types of support (64%).
• 38% of referrals concerned individuals with a mixed, unstable or unclear ideology, followed by referrals for right-wing (24%) and Islamist radicalisation (24%).
• 10% of referrals to Prevent (561) were adopted as Channel cases, an increase of 48% last year, and the highest recorded since comparable data has been available.
• For the first time, there were more Channel cases for concerns related to right-wing radicalisation (45%) compared with Islamist radicalisation (37%).
